Adult Sunday School

Our Adult Sunday School classes take place at 10:00 a.m. between our two Sunday worship services. Sardis is about nurturing disciples of Jesus Christ, our adult Sunday school does just that! People are invited to join a small group and grow in your faith through the study, praying, and fellowship of the class. For more detailed information, please see our ministry guide.

Special Sunday Opportunities

  • What Presbyterians Believe About the Nexus of Science & Religion: Presented by former NC Governor and former Davidson College chemistry professor, Jim Martin.
    • Sunday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall: “Science is not the Enemy of Faith." In light of the classic conflict, we will examine scientific evidence that supports belief. Emphasis will be on the structure of DNA, proteins, and carbohydrates, using original cartoon images to simplify your understanding. These essentials of life could not happen by any random coincidence. The odds against are practically infinite.
    • Sunday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall: “Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, and Other Curiosities” Is there life on other planets? Or are we alone? Which possibility is more comforting? If we discover life on a nearby planet, is it likely to be thoughtful, communicative and technologically advanced? Why is water so uniquely supportive of life? Are Fibonacci numbers Divine? We will consider these and other “intriguing coincidences.”
    • Sunday, November 3 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall: “The Politics of Science and Religion” On the eve of election day, we should look closer at the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Do we have “Separation of Church and State?” Why does the other political party deny science? (What?) We will discuss these and related matters that the American political system has difficulty keeping in balance.
  • What Presbyterians Believe About the Presbytery: Presented by Rev. Jan Edmiston, the General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Charlotte
    • Sunday, November 24 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Have your questions ready and join Rev. Jan Edmiston, the General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Charlotte, to learn about what the presbytery is and does.

  • Power, Poverty, and Politics: A Study of the Book of Nehemiah: This study, led by Joe B., will explore questions like, how should the Church relate to the world? How should the Church use its power in the world? How should the Church relate to the State? The world has not changed so much since the time of Nehemiah. What can we learn from his work rebuilding Jerusalem about what to do and not to do?
